Today I would like to talk about an issue that many people have when hiring a carpet cleaner. You call a carpet cleaning company and they sound very professional over the phone or the price was right and then they send a tech out to your house. Most companies will ask you if you would like carpet protector (scotch guard) and of course there would be an extra fee for that. Alot of things can be going through your mind at that point... Is it really needed? Is this just a way for the carpet cleaning company to bring more money in? Or is it kinda like adding and extra layer of meat to that sandwich you buy at subway.. it is not needed but it makes it taste better. First of all let me explain something, when the manufacter creates the carpet, one of the last things they do to the carpet is they spray it with a coat of carpet protector (scotch guard). Today most carpet is synthetic and is called 5th generation carpet due to all the stages it goes through before it reaches your home. That doesn't mean it won't need carpet protector in the future. Carpet is walked on a lot and it will erode the protector afterawhile. To see the difference between a carpet that is protected and one that is not just spill some water on you carpet. If it bubbles at the surface it means there is a thin layer of coating that is protecting your carpet. If it penetrates you might want to get it protected.
